State Representative Alex Garza is serving his second term representing the 12th House District in the Michigan House of Representatives. The 12th House District encompasses the cities of Taylor, Romulus and Van Buren Township. Representative Garza is the third oldest of four children and calls the great city of Taylor his home. Representative Garza serves on the House Regulatory Reform, Local Government and Municipal Finance, and the Agriculture committees. Representative Garza is the youngest Latino ever elected to the Michigan House of Representatives. Earlier this year, Representative Garza was elected by his peers as both the Chairman of the Latino Caucus and the Assistant Democratic Floor Leader in the Michigan House of Representatives.
Representative Garza was first elected to the Taylor City Council in November 2013, becoming the youngest and first person of color elected to local office in Taylor’s history. He was re-elected to City Council in 2017. As the highest vote-getter, he served as the city council President. Garza previously worked for former State Representative Stephanie Chang as a legislative aide.
Representative Garza attended both the University of Michigan-Dearborn and Baker College, earning a bachelor’s degree in political science and an associate’s degree in business management, respectively.
